Oh how Mexicans love parties! Even the poorest of folks in our town think nothing of hiring out awesome, expensive disco equipment or even a live band for a birthday and cook up enough food for a small army. Between spreading the costs out among many family members and flattening the budget, the party goes ahead in grand style... Anyone is free to drop by - and many do. Like us... There is no need to tell people about the party. The first chord of the first song announces the event at 120 decilbles and everyone knows it's PARTY TIME.
Reminds me of the parties I attended when I lived in a Mexican neighborhood near downtown San Diego,Ca.
There would be barbecued chicken and carne asada on the grill, toasted tortillas and a chilled lemon flavored tomato, onion and chile pepper salad. On birthdays "Berria" (goat meat ) would be served .Store bought sheet cakes were elaborate and fancy
There would be Cumbia music playing on the stereo and lots of cerveza to go around.
Often parties would last into the wee hours of the morning. :)
