Border Wall Debate: Why the Border Wall Won't Work

An extract from Discovery Channel En Español's "Destino: Frontera Norte" on why the proposed (now approved) border fence/wall between the U.S. and Mexico won't work. It was made for a debate we had on the topic. We didn't actually use it as our position (decided at the last moment by coin toss) ended up being: "The border wall between the U.S. and Mexico WILL be effective and WILL NOT damage diplomatic relations between the two countries". A war? Between the US and Mexico? That will never happen, as there are too many economic interests among the two nations, to the point where both the countries' economies are codependent (thank NAFTA for this).

Besides, with overextended armed forces and two wars being simultaneously fought, there's no way on Earth the US could possibly wage a war against Mexico, not that they would even consider it to start with.

This wall is just a political ploy by the US government, it doesn't want the illegal immigration to stop cause of the cheap labour it brings, but it also doesn't want to piss off the US citizens who want it to stop, so they make it look as though they're doing something to combat it while making sure the things they do are totally ineffective.

Indeed. The wall is somehow physical "proof" that the government wants to curb illegal immigration, though in practice, it does and will do very little in this regard. The wall could work, but only if it's accompanied by good, strong legislation, something that isn't happening as of now.

Amen, my first job was picking up trash, second working in a produce dept. I've dug ditches, had numerous manual labor jobs. I'm just a typical white american as well who has valued having any job that paid a living wage since I was 14.

I recall the Amnesty lover McCain once said "Americans won't pick lettuce for $50/hr". Oh really? By my calculations that's $96,000/yr. Where can I please sign up for one of these jobs???
