@sajeevan1 It stays on 24/7 It turns itself "off" when it gets to the temperature which you have set then it turns back on when it drops below

@IwanRowlz must be a type of plant/mold called algae. its doesnt do any harm, but i suggest cleaning the tank even though its edible for most fish. so it wouldnt surprise me if they are fine.

hey i just started a tropical fish tank do i keep the heater on always or do i turn it off

You should always keep it on if it has a thermostat. The thermostat will swicht it on and off as needed.
