The subplots and vignettes are entirely the point of the film. The director is illustrating a whole variety of food connections, which he couldn't possibly do with one story. And as Tampopo learns how to make perfect noodles, so we also learn all the things food is about.

I'm half-and-half about this movie.

Half of it - the main story - is great stuff. Both funny and sweet at heart.

But the side vignettes I either didn't understand, or else they creeped me out. And I don't like being creeped out.

So keep the main story.
