A group of rabbis and Jewish mystics have taken to the skies over Israel, praying and blowing ceremonial trumpets to ward off swine flu.
About 50 religious leaders circled over the country on Monday, chanting prayers and blowing the horns called "shofars".
The flight's aim was "to stop the pandemic so people will stop dying from it," Rabbi Yitzhak Batzri was quoted as saying in Yedioth Aharanot newspaper.
The flu is often referred to as H1N1 in Israel, where pigs are seen as unclean.

Eating pork is banned under Jewish dietary laws.
According to Israel's health ministry, there have been more than 2,000 cases of swine flu in the country, with five fatalities so far.
"We are certain that, thanks to the prayer, the danger is already behind us," added Mr Batzri was quoted as saying.
Television footage showed rabbis in black hats rocking backwards and forwards as they read prayers from Kabbala, a form of Jewish mysticism which counts the singer Madonna among its devotees.
The shofar is a the horn of a deer or sheep, and is used to mark major religious occasions in Judaism

  • Why shoud men be degraded by antisemitic comments in the face of the swine flu plague? Why shouldnt people express atonement and mercy towards the Creator when in distress of a serious epidemic?

  • Headphones.

  • insane people

  • @AOnTheWeb this is not fucking true, these black hats DO display these aberrations even in commercial flights, such as El Al or Lufthansa. It's incredibly annoying!

  • a shofar is a ram's horn, not a dear or sheep. Madonna is definitely not a devotee to Kabbalah. She's into some new age hooplah that is not anything close to the genuine article. Why shouldn't we cry out, each person according to their ability and tradition, when calamity befalls mankind?

  • Holy Jesus !!!!!

  • @AOnTheWeb Well that's a relief then to know I'll never have to tolerate this form of religious nonsense on a commercial flight.

I don't know where the anti-semitism accusation comes from. I don't have any thing against theists per se, just theism.

  • @chango369yt yo i hope you realize this isn't a commercial flight, but a private flight specifically to pray against swine flu. even if it sounds dumb to you, keep in mind religious jews would never do this on a commercial flight where they would disturb others, because it would be a chilul hashem (something that gives non-jews a bad impression of jews). so yeah maybe you wouldn't want to be near these guys on a flight but keep in mind you'd never have to... so take your anti-semitism elsewhere

  • The ignorance: it hurts me.

  • lmfao omg thas awesome
