The aikido technique kokyunage done on aihanmi katatedori, by aikido instructor Stefan Stenudd, 6 dan Aikikai. Here, the principles of soft meeting are applied to kokyunage - a throw, which is pretty much designed for it, since it should not involve brute force. Notice that the hands meet without any gripping. By spiral moves, the attacker's energy is snared, gathered and guided into the throw. Gabriel Jurcak is uke. This was filmed by Larry Kwolek on an aikido seminar in the Czech Republic.

  • If every single part of training has to be "martial" meaning that it should be directly usable in fighting situation, you should cease doing sit-ups and warm ups, too. I agree on everything you say. Still I think that we need many ways of training. When I train kihon-waza I know exactly how my uke respods, because the rehersal is a kata. When I train oyo-waza I am more careful taking into account that uke might do something unexpected if I give him room.

  • Further more nothing is lost by making it martial. It is still done effortlessing and gracefully as all aikido must be. Which would you rather?; a martial art that makes you untouchable and effortlessly the centre of the universe? or an art that isnt martial, and is made up of soft movement going no where, with no application beyond itself

  • Obeying martial prinipals is what allows us to develop our art. It sets the parameters and gives a method of verification. Without it we start to make aikido a bunch of seperate ideas. And i've noticed that people say its not martial one moment, then claim it is martial the next. Kokyu nage is the most martial of aikido techniques, it contains within it the real bones of aikido. If its not martial then none of aikido is.

  • This is kokyo-nage, which in my view is not intended to be a self-defence tecnique. It is intended for training certain principals of controlling ukes force, speed and direction. Stenudd, do you agree?

  • I think one of the fundemental changes that need to occur in aikido world wide, is that we have to be aware that people can and will let go at the first opportunity, and then attack again. Then you can see that what counts is where you are standing in relation to the uke. Are you safe? As such its the entry and timing that count. This video shows what not to do.

  • haha! tack.. ska försöka gradera mig men alla namn är så svåra att komma ihåg! men den här viden kommer att hjälpa. Tack igen ^^
