Part(1/2)
This video covers the dissection of the Playstation 3 Eye Camera and the removal of its infrared filter (IR) so that a visible blocking bandpass filter can be added as seen in Part2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbMqsrm2TTs
(Vimeo version here: http://vimeo.com/2939528 )

This is a very popular camera in the world of home-built MultiTouch screens using optical-based technologies, namely the method known as Laser Light Plane (LLP).
Thanks to the clever hacking of the camera by Alex P, this camera can now work on any operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux). His blog can be found here:
http://alexpopovich.wordpress.com/2008/10/02/sony-ps3eye-camera-directshow-ca...
He has gotten it to achieve framerates and resolutions that max out at 125fps in 320x240 resolution and 75fps in 640x480 resolution.
In the second part, a piece of floppy disk is used as a poor-mans infrared band pass filter (3 layers of exposed negative film also works), but better bandpass filters can be inserted if cut to size.
My store on my website now gives the ability to purchase already modded PS3 Eye Cameras: http://peauproductions.com/store/
and tons of accessories if you want to mod the camera yourself.

My MultiTouch table seen briefly at the end of the second part, is using a technique known as LED-LP (using LEDs to create an IR plane instead of lasers).

  • what is the purpose of an infared blocker... Whats wrong with IR that it needs to be blocked?

  • @EricGarcia4life The camera modifications shone in this video are done so that the camera only sees the infrared light illuminating a object you want to track. When used in an optical-based multitouch setup, an object such as your finger on the touch screen surface is then tracked as a small white IR blob. This blob is converted by the computer into an x,y cursor point and thus creates a touch screen. Please read our website for much more info.

  • @EATABAGOFHELL Nope, just keep trying :)

  • @devilsonlychild Yes you can use other cameras, but the best spec'd one with the cheapest price is the PS Eye camera. Almost all web cameras have the infrared blocking filter that is being taken out in this video.
