DFA started at Sivuyile College in Guguletu, Cape Town with a classical ballet class with thirty-four students in 1991. Today DFA runs programmes in Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Athlone on the Cape Flats and the rural areas of Barrydale, Montagu, McGregor, Bonnievale, and Nkqubela near Robertson in the Western Cape Province. To date, DFA has trained over 1 500 children in classical ballet and other dance disciplines, including musical theatre, African contemporary and Spanish dance. In a safe environment, DFA's approach of teaching dance to develop self esteem, discipline and confidence in children in historically disadvantaged communities, improves young people's chances of success in the future. The Phyllis Spira Trust, established in 2009, provides exceptional DFA students with an opportunity to become professional dancers. Selected students are sponsored to further their dance training at a reputable dance school or academy. Film by Elizabeth Fisler.
