COSEE Teachers Workshop: Lake Ontario

Here before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 180-foot R/V Peter L. Wise Lake Guardian stand the gates to one of the eight locks of Welland Ship Canal. The canal, which runs 27 miles, provides a direct route for ships travelling between Lakes Erie and Ontario without having to contend with Niagara Falls. From the first to the last lock in the system (between Lakes Erie and Ontario), there is an elevation change of about 327 feet.

In July 2008, New York Sea Grant's Helen Domske led a team of 16 teachers and 3 Great Lakes staff members from COSEE (Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence) aboard the Guardian for a week. Teachers had the rare opportunity to study with researchers on Lake Ontario.
