I originally bought two Mindstorms kits. Then I bought many extra wheels and motors from the Lego Educational Store online.

How many motors did you use? and where did you position them?

There are 7 motors. One for each wheel, and two on the back for more climbing power. You can see the assemblies and positioning at my website!
Look at the images: Rear Dual Motor Assembly; Very Small Motor Assembly; and Motor Assembly Separated. It is possible to have steering by adding a turntable and motor to the front and back assemblies.
