Please click on "WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY". This was an experiment with Winson & Newton's Artisan water mixable oil paints on an 8x10 canvas panel in my studio. They are real oils using a saffron-linseed oil base. They stay wet while painting, so you can really manipulate the image. on this one, I used rolled paper "smear sticks" like I use in oil pastels and a utility knife blade to scrape through the paint for really fine detail. The paint stays wet for 1-2 days, dry to the touch (still a little smearable) in 3-4 days, and varnishable in a few weeks. Also, they do NOT have the traditional oil paint smell which my wife is grateful for... actually no smell at all unless you put you nose smack up to it. I purchased these at my local Hobby Lobby store with a 40% off internet coupon, so the cost of the 10-tube set was around $20. I have now found these paints sold in larger tube sizes can purchase individual colors. Here's a link to Winsor & Newton website for more info:

This photo was shot in March 2008 of a tree felled by Hurricane Francis at Castaway Island park along the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway in Jacksonville FL. The tree is still alive, just toppled over. the exposed roots have died and are weathering, but there is still enough of its root system in place to keep the tree going.

Thank you for joining me in this experiment with a new medium, and thanks for watching... as always "STAY CREATIVE AND KEEP PAINTING"

  • wow...that is really nice, i havent tried oils yet, makes me want to go out and give it a try. thanks for posting.

  • Thanks. I really like what you are doing with pastels... pushing the envelope so to speak. the painting techniques for oils are similar to the pastels, I think you would do well with them. Have fun with them!

  • Enjoyed watching very much. Am about to take my first oil painting class, and am exploring supplies. Thanks for posting this.

  • Hi... since painting this, I have explored Winsor & Newton's pro series oils, and mixed with their cold pressed linseed oil & turp, they can dry in 1-2 days, faster than the watermix oils as less safflower oil is used. The orderless turp is very nice to work with also, Thanks for watching

  • huh intresting, i was thinking of making some of my own watermixable oils using the water mixable linseed oil they sell.

how are they when it comes to doing portraits (the water mixable ones) do you know?

  • H again. The water-mix oils have safflower & sunflower oils substitued for, or in addition to a little linseed oil. I don't think just adding water-mix linseed oil will make reg oils into water mix.... may become milky, don't know, haven't tried that. The Water-mix oils are good for portrait work (they work just like regular oils), maybe even better as they seem to dry a little slower, giving you more control over the final outcome. Thanks again for watching.

  • Thanks for that - really enjoyed watching it - and listening to the music! Nice to read others' comments and great tip about the rolled up paper thingy - can't remember the name either even though I have a couple myself!! I'm new to water mixable oils but so far am enjoying using them but finding it hard to find much info on 'how to'.

  • personally i think these paints look dull and lifeless compared to real oils especially Old Holland.

  • nice 1 gazza!

i thought the subject photo a little boring...but your painting was way better and far more interesting
