they surf well and handle rough water excellent - don't really track that great in skinny water...sluggish but really cut through the waves.

You can't paddle the Mini-X like a 14-footer sea kayak. They are different, so require different handling or paddling styles. For Mini-X, it is best not to use powestroke. It is best to go slow and steady. It is afterall not built for speed or distance. But it is a great fishing kayak. It's lightweight is definitely a super plus.
