Opponents to the US plan in the Czech Republic have greeted with delight the prospect that a new base won't be built in the country.
But some are still disappointed that it was the U.S.- and not their government - that made the decision.

"Must be independent", hate to burst your bubble, but the current government in Poland is basically a puppet of the US government. Even Bush, as warmonegring as he was, warned Saakashvili not to move into the Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and he lost everything, from support to his false aspiration to NATO, which by now is basically a misnomer.

I like your sensationalism. The US is merely using the Póles and Czechoslovaks cannon fodder, so in case a conflict broke out, the real losers are Poland and Czech., not the Russians nor the US. I've been to both countries and I love those places; I consider extremely friendly people, especially the Poles, but exploited by everyone for their own ends and set up for suffering.

Russia is a very mixed bag. NEGATIVES: endemic corruption (worse than ours in Chicago), poor rural infrastructure, fearsome industrial pollution, unsafe factories, dicey blood supply, culture of bribes (very anachronistic), rising ultra-nationalism, low birth rate (among ethnic Russians), unbalanced economy, & huge military & government bureacracy (as bad as the USA's--maybe worse).
