I stripped Xandros from my Eee PC's main memory and installed Windows XP. I've also got Xubuntu installed on an SD card, so I decided to show how quickly you can boot into either environment. Not bad for a device with a 900MHz celeron processor (underclocked to 630MHz) and 512MB of RAM.

  • hi brad! i want to buy the eee as a second laptop and ultra portable. was wondering how easy it is to install xp on it? how do u install without an optical drive? any hacking required? also, how is the pre-installed os? is it good? does xp run fast? thanks!

  • It's easiest to install Windows with a CD drive, but you can do it with a flash drive too. You can find instructions at the EeeUser Wiki. XP runs okay on a stock unit, but I've upgraded my RAM to 2GB and now it runs like a dream.

The pre-installed OS boots faster than Windows, but you have to jump through some hoops if you want to install extra programs.

  • u work for downloadsquad? i saw another review on youtube from downloadsquad! thats awesome man! thats the 1st rss feed i read everyday! :-) do you work freelance? is it fun working for them?

  • Yeah, I'm kind of fond of Download Squad too, but they pay me to say that. :) I did a two part review of the Eee PC interface for DLS before starting up my own page at Eee Site dot Net.

  • Sorry, I'm just wondering, do you have the 2GB flash drive, or the 4GB-16 GB HD? I was just thinking If I bought a 2 GB model, if I would be able to install XP with ease?

    EMZ=]

  • It'll fit on a 2GB disk, but you'll want to disable the page file. And it'll fit a lot better if you use nlite to shrink your installation disc first. I happen to be running it on a 4GB model, but the OS and programs eat up just under 2GB leaving some room for storage.

  • xubuntu is MUCH better then any form of windoz, you need to get that crap off your hard drive.

  • Yes wireless workes with the latest Xubuntu, ubuntu, kubuntu, and all variants of Mint. the function keys work fine too.The camera seems to be a problem for me,

  • not my eeepc my pc

  • That can't be! EEE PC can only handle 1,60 GHZ (1000HA)!

  • does the wireless work with xubuntu?

  • 900mhz thats crap mines 3.20ghz p4 or something like that

  • ahah owned

  • Not exactly true, if you make linux load like windows they will appear to boot at the same time. BTW the way to do that is you load your drivers a couple modules needed for X turn on parallel service loading (experimental ;)) dump into runtime 5 with your login manager ASAP then continue to load the services in the background of the login manager. It has its downside, such as if a service fails you may not know about it right away but you have to give and take.

  • YOU=NOOB OF THE YEAR!!!!

Some of the most stable OS's are linux and QNX.

I got a blue screen of death on my vista pc doing about nothing.

Windows even crashed during a presentation by the man himself. I would kill myself if that happend of shame.
