  • So they can really vary in color hey? Yellow, orange grayish white? I have to send you a video of mine an see if you think its a hen of the woods

  • @myCreativeDifference Feel free to shoot me a video or photos and I can take a look. Hen's are very easy to identify and they really only have one false look alike - berkeley's poloypore. It stains black when you touch it and the fronds are very large compared with the multiple smaller to medium fronds on a hen. Google the false look alike and you'll see the difference, but I'm happy to help.

  • can you find these in ontario canada ?

  • @thewildwest1000 - Not sure. They're generally found on live and dead oaks, but can grow on many other hardwoods too.

  • I did. Just find an area with mature oak trees and you will be in a good spot. You may have to check 50 oaks before you find them. I would try the slopes at Granite Peak. Big oaks and I don't think anyone goes back there.

  • Are they poisonous or can you eat them.

  • THEY LOOK SO HAPPY. :D

  • @thewildwest1000 You can definitely find hen of the woods in Ontario Canada. I have picked my own before and cooked it with some olive oil. Yuuuummm

  • I pick the Hen of the woods every year in RI and CT I get about 100 or so lbs a year. Where the pine trees mix with the oak I always find the most. All these years I have never picked the Chicken's I didn't know they were edible. I can't wait to try them next year. The Hens are great, I like to marinate them or mix with the brown oaks to make Sausage Peppers and Mushrooms. My family has been doing it since they came here in late 19th C. My father old them to restaurants. Thanks for posting

  • Hello,

I was just wondering if you could look at my video and tell me if this mushroom is a hen or a chicken of the woods :-)

Look my video up under my screen name of feedthesoulstore. Its my only video at the moment :-)
