For those unfamiliar with Purim, there really is a reason that Shabot was drinking. In Orthodox (and maybe Conservative) Judaism, adults commonly get drunk. It's even a tradition!

The reason why people get drunk on Purim and not Hannukah, Passover, etc. is because in the other holidays, we were under threat of slavery or persecution. In Purim, Haman wanted to go further than that-he wanted to kill all the Jews.

Some rabbis in the area thought he was too influential, true. But it was the Romans who really wanted to kill him. Plus, some actually believe that it was a Jewish conspiracy, plotted by every Jew in the area, which it wasn't. Jesus's death was the work of a few people, not a whole group.
