how is your style compared to Sakugawa Shoriji ryu, or is it more like Kenkokan? I am new to these styles, but I jsut read the book of Hisatake (sp?) (kenkokan)
Hi mate,I practice a system called goso kempo,I agree with your comments about kata not being used in a real situation like the way it is practiced, when I practice my kata I like to break down and explore the kata taking certain concepts and principles within it and applying them to combat such as; angle and direction of attacking the body, rooting and transference of power etc, a strong mindset can be developed from attacking through your kata then applying that to combat, regards.
you would not use one in a real confrontation, there is no adrenal dump during kata, you can practice balance and technique anywhere so why do them, if you where training mindset it would not be done like on the clip, cause a real life fight looks nothing as controlled as that,
nice kata by the way, where is it from? and where is your style from?
Hi Mate, If you wouldn't use a low stance in real life why practice them? IMO a lower stance such as kiba datchi is used for transfering power such as pulling someone down, what do you think? regards,
No, as bigzam1 says, the low stances are for balance. Note that we're not talking about the very low stances they use on kata competitions: those ARE just for show. In reality the 'lowness' of the stances depend on who's teaching. Do a Google Images search on 'shiko dachi' and you'll know what I mean: on the one image the karateka is practically standing, on the other a practitioner is nearly touching the ground.
i practice kinkoshinkai shorinji-ryu kempo, a mix of okinawan seidokan and shaolin kempo. pretty interesting you don't employ low stances as lower stances lead to better balance overall.
Hi, thanks for your comments, our system doesn't employ really low stances, we place more importance on staying rooted and maintaining balance throughout the stance, do you practice shotokan? regards,

The question is...are we just going low for the sake of the art? Is it really practical to employ low stances and would you use them in real life??
