I was raised working for my Dad, a man that had been running dirt machinery since age 11 or 12! His older brothers were excellent 1930s-1940s operators who were bad to drink and my Dad run their tractors as much as they did! I have pictures of my uncle operating a maintainer that was horse powered!
@1tirefryer In response to both of you, there is actually only 1 idler wheel, one sound suppression wheel and the drive wheel, all the other one's you guys are talking about are called 'rollers'. The top roller is now standard in all new D10's and D11's, it keeps the tracks up to correct tension longer which reduces the chance of getting dry joints or extended links. @1tirefryer I understand the high drive that Caterpillar introduced in the later 80s, but why do so few D11s include the small idler wheel that is in front of the drive sprocket that is mounted on top of the "track cannon". It seems to keep the track tighter but it is very rare.
@epistte The reason for the upper idler wheel or "triangle track" as we call it up here, is to mainly keep most of the dozer out of the mud in muddy situations
