Every member of the Erub community has a certain role to undertake in the preparation of a communal feast. It is more than just an event that brings the community together as each element of the preparation is an important as finishing the meal.
Tom Mosby and Matt Golinski travelled to Erub for the sports carnival to learn and share in the traditions of hunting, preparing and serving of foods from the island.
At the Indigenous Knowledge Centre in the afternoon of Friday 25th September, Tom spoke about the Margaret Lawrie Collection held at the State Library of Queensland.
On Saturday 26th September the grounds of the Saam Karem Beizam Sports Stadium were the main venue for the kupmari and the preparation of the womens sop sop dish. Decorated by banners and tablecloths created by the school children of Erub, this feast closed the sports carnival and community identity was celebrated through food, song and dance!
Down near the jetty on Sunday 27th September, Matt and Tom battled it out to see who had the quickest knife in the east.
Matt created some simple healthy dishes using foods and produce from the island.
