I meant that I could see why people expressed offense given the way he phrased the line (to be clear, I'm not saying I myself am offended, I'm saying that it's not surprising that the phrasing of the line increased the likelihood of people "deciding" to be offended). As soon as he says "This is going to sound really cruel" he's lost them. They're preparing to feel offended after that. It's like saying "if you laugh at this, you're being cruel", and they don't like it.
