Mario Lanza (1921-1959)

"Serenade"(Drigo). Recorded June 24, 1951, for The Mario Lanza Show, with studio orchestra conducted by Ray Sinatra.

There are two extant Lanza recordings of Riccardo Drigo's "Serenade"- the RCA release and this radio show performance. I find the latter to be the more convincing of the two: Lanza is in better voice, the tempo is more relaxed (not as rushed), and the singing has more lilt. It's nice to have the luxury of making comparisons! Incidentally, the second photo in the slideshow is of the Bel Canto Trio- Lanza, the great bass-baritone George London, and soprano Frances Yeend.

  • Just found this today, 11-21-2010..I've been looking for this tune for years. I sang a version of it during my high school in the late 30's, It was called, "These Things I Left In My Heart,"

  • ce pacat ca s-a pirdut un om de o asemenea valoare. cand vom invata sa pretuim fiecare om la justa lui valoare?

  • A simply fantastic perfomance from my fav tenor ever wonderful share cheers gazza uk

  • The greatest ever!

  • almaviva: Sorry, the Nelson Eddy movie was "Let Freedom Ring"(1939), with Virginia Bruce and the great Victor MacLaglen, not Northwest Outpost(1947).

  • Almaviva: If you want the english lyrics to this melody by Drigo, you can hear it in a CD titled "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" It is song #8 on the CD. It is available at Amazon. By listening to the song, you can jot down the lyrics. He also sang it in an old movie called "Northwest Outpost" which you might still find on VHS on E-Bay. Not on DVD.

  • almaviva06: If you go to the Google Groups "Mario Lanza, Tenor" site, you'll find the lyrics posted on the "Drigo's Serenade" discussion that's currently taking place there.
