Comparing the differences in both recoil and sound suppression between these two nearly identical BCM 11.5" short barreled rifles (SBRs).
The black-colored 11.5" BCM SBR is all standard as-is, the way it came from the factory and bought online directly from the Bravo Company USA website, with nothing modified internally and is a complete BCM upper with BCM BCG and GunFighter charging handle (Mod 03 - Large size). It has a Knights Armament NT4-QDSS (Quick Detach Sound Suppressor) mounted on a KAC Triple Tap muzzle brake.
The black SBR is awesome and is the primary SBR I run during training sessions when I want something really short and super reliable. It functions 100% and is a blast to shoot! The Triple Tap muzzle brake makes it pretty loud and concussive to shooters on my left and right (and front, in some training scenarios), but really helps to mitigate felt recoil and muzzle flip, allowing me to get off much faster followup shots on the target(s). It's been through 2 different carbine courses with me now, Trident Concepts Combative Carbine 1 and Magpul Dynamics Carbine 1 classes, and was featured with me in pictures in 2 issues of SWAT Magazine, of which I wrote article in last year (March and April, 2010)..... SO, needless to say, this little bitch and I have some history together and she's special to me. She's truly my number one gal'!!! :)
The Dark Earth-colored 11.5" BCM short-barrelled carbine (which I painted myself with Aervoe spray paint), with the Surefire FA556-212 suppressor mounted, is the EXACT SAME as the above-mentioned black version, with the exception that it has a smaller sized gas port that was custom-done for me by a friend. The benefits of a smaller port are less recoil, as less gas is being forced through the gas port and into the bolt carrier group, which slows things down considerably.
WITHOUT a suppressor, it will typically have issues cycling and ejecting spent cartridges and/or loading fresh rounds into the chamber from the magazine (i.e. it has a tendency to "short-stroke"). It primarily does this with weak ammo, like the Hornady steel-cased 55gr "TAP Training" ammo I'm shooting in this video. If you run hotter loads, it will cycle much more reliably... but when it comes to training ammo I'm cheap, and I buy the cheapest ammo my other primary guns can run 95%+ of the time.
WITH a sound suppressor added is when this carbine with a smaller gas port really shines. Suppressors increase the gas pressure substantially, which causes much more gas to get recycled back into the BCG in order to cycle the gun. This excess gas is called "blowback," and it essentially speeds things up greatly and cycles the gun more violently. That's why the rate of fire increases a lot when firing a full-auto gun with a silencer installed on the muzzle. It also blows noticeably more gas back into your face, and it increases the felt recoil and muzzle flip quite a bit. A lot of people think silencers reduce recoil, but they're dead wrong... it increases it very noticeably.
And that's where having a smaller gas port really shines when using a sound suppressor. It reduces the amount of gas being blown back, which reduces recoil substantially, reduces all that excess blowback into your face, reduces wear on the gun, and just slows things back down a bit.
This 11.5" BCM SBR is an outstanding blaster to shoot suppressed and I love it!

Is that a Laser Devices DBAL laser system? If it is how do you like it? I am interested in buying one.
Semper FI!

@Mikey6048 Yeah I really like mine. It's the Class 1 DBAL-I2 with green visible laser and .7mW IR laser. Now that the battery issues have (hopefully) been resolved, it's great. They had to replace the board in mine to fix the issue. But I've used mine probably a lot more than the average user and I love it. I even have full power units and I use this one more.

The knights armament is qieter at first but once they heat up,the surefire is qieter

@mikethemaniac1 It's hard to actually get a true representation of the sound via a video, but the Knights is actually a bit quieter in general (and heavier, and more blow back, and crappy QD mount). But I like having both nonetheless.

Finally someone who slowly releases the trigger until it re-engages. Everyone always shoots like their finger is scared of the trigger. Nice control amigo. Semper fi 1/5.

@Cplknox The Corps taught us well, brother! I was Golf Co. 2/5 by the way, 2002-2003 (wounded in Iraq invasion).
