Still experimenting with the 55 gallon drum vertical axis wind turbine. I changed to a larger DC motor. This seems to produce more power but it also takes a stronger steady wind to get the turbine spinning. The ratio of my belt drive is about 4.33 to 1. So if the turbine is spinning about 60 revolutions per minute the generator/motor spins about 260 times.

  • This turbine worked but it didn't work very well. I don't believe this design has enough torque to create a lot of power at least in light winds. It will work with a small generator. I was going to build a cover for the generator on top like the roof of a house. I plan on building a second version of this. Perhaps the second prototype will have more barrels. Also I've been told that using a chain or gears would produce less friction than my belt drive.

  • Thank You. If I added one or two more barrels how would that affect the torque or rpm in the same type of wind. I'd like to build another one. But I may try a horizontal axis wind turbine first. I already have the motor and a 40+ foot tower to mount it on. I just need to fabricate some pvc pipe blades...

  • Nice try with your pics and stiching pics, you are good at editing pics and making them vedios

  • Nice machine but it will never drive that motor or a car alternator to full output in anything less than a gale-force wind. Over 35 years ago a certain Mike Hackleman wrote a how-to book about these turbines: "Wind and Windspinners." Very informative! He ran into the same issues you have and reported his findings in The Mother Earth News (from that same era). You would do well to read those sources. Good Luck. :)

  • Get the system up on the roof! it will work better and use magnets for near frictionless turning!

  • can't ou put 3 or 5 generators in there???

  • u a\cant depend on wind every time to generate RPM.. better use magnets power to rotate the shaft.... will be last for 400 yrs....

  • Using belts will make a lot of friction. Try to use chain or gears instead cause they are less friction than belts.

  • @dolinick

    That would help make a good determination as to which designs you should incorporate in your area. The HAWT's will generally produce more electricity in most wind conditions, but there could be some exceptions to that rule, depending upon the designs and the wind characteristics.
