You guys always tend to abuse the meaning of the enlightenment by 'agreeing to disagree' before every really getting to the crux of the debate (that's the part you're afraid of because it exposes the truth). The middle school I attended had us read 1984 when I was in 7th grade. When I reread it "many moons" later it was clearly a different book.... one reason is because I WANTED to understand it. Also it doesn't help that the university has a habit of giving students just enough work so they can't intellectually absorb it.

I would suggest reading "Economics in One Lesson" by Hazlitt. It's a really concise overview which exposes many of the fallacious arguments employed by "modern" economics.

I've read "Liberalism" from Ludwig von Mises, "Studies in Philosophy, Politics, & Economics" from Hayek, & Schumpeter's "Capitalism, Socialism, & Democracy" many moons ago as an undergraduate. This discussion has made me want to read Hayek's book again to see how I respond to it after so many years. As it stands now, I tend more to Keynesian theories, but I have no problem challenging them.

Note: I didn't study economics & my reading stemmed from philosophy courses.
