I've read a couple of Dawkin's more recent books where he states talks like these in his youth are a huge source of quote-mining for creationists. I can see why.

You missed his point. Faith in the scientific method means faith in evidence, accurate predections etc. Faith in religion means faith in desert scribblings of some scizophrenic nuts who where hearing voices.
