In this discussion moderated by Derrick Alridge of the University of Virginia, scholars Larry Rowley of the University of Michigan, Elizabeth Varon of U.Va., Corey D.B. Walker of Brown University, and Coy Barefoot, a U.Va. alum, author and Charlottesville radio personality, discuss the life and legacy of Henry Martin. Martin, who was born a slave at Monticello, worked at the University as a slave and later when free, serving as U.Va.'s bell-ringer for 53 years.

The discussion centers on what we know about Henry Martin and what more needs to be learned -- about him and about others living in the University and Charlottesville communities during his time. Henry Martin died in 1915.

A celebration of Martin's life held later in the day at the Rotunda also pays tribute. This ceremony can also be found on U.Va.'s YouTube channel.
