John Garfield, way before James Dean, Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift & Paul Newman, there was John Garfield, the original rebel and under rated actor.

  • Not one actor today can shine a candle to John Garfield. He had a special grace, even with the bravado, that hasn't been seen since. (apoligies to the late Paul Newman )His beauty was in his straightforward style, blessed with his handsome good looks. A tragic ending to an all too short visit on this Earth. What a Guy!!!

  • Amen! Very well said.....

  • A beautiful tribute to Julie. My favorite for many years. As Rabbi Newman said at Julies funeral " He came like a meteor, and like a meteor he departed." God bless him and his beautiful little daughter Katherine. Anyone know the musical score to this?

  • Thank you for your nice comments, he was the best. The music is the classical Nessun Dorman, from Italy.

  • what kind of movies was he in?

  • Mainly tough guys roles but he played very well aganinst type. He was on contract with Warner Bros for years. If you get a chance check him out in, "Body and Soul", "Force of Evil", "Four Daughters", "They Made Me a Criminal", "The Postman Always Rings Twice", "He Ran All the Way", "Humoresque", "Gentleman's Agreement" to name a few.

  • Thank you for this absolutely stunning tribute to my wonderful father.

This makes me cry, he was so beautiful, so gifted, and so Blacklisted.

    Thank you for remembering.

  • Mr. Garfield was my mother's favorite actor when she was a girl. TCM had a day of his films yesterday and a loving and most interesting tribute from his daughter. Some films, I had seen before, while others were new to me. Mr. Garfield was a brilliant actor and a person who championed the rights of others. It was shameful what was done to him The photo montages in this tribute give us an insight into his character. Your choice of music is sweet, yet haunting.

  • As a young girl, Mom & me would watched the classic's on TV. as young as i was ..I fell in love with this Man..the very first time i seen in the movie "The Post Man Always Rings Twice".. NO-ONE..Then Or NOW..Can compare to the Talent or Good Look's of John Garfield!..thank you for this awesome Tribute to a Man i still remember!!

  • @gropingwithastoker "Then, for a finale, they got together on talent. 'Sure,' they said, 'let him have talent. Not enough to let him do anything on his own, anything good or great. Just enough to let him help other people. It's all he deserves."

You felt like he wrote this stuff himself. He didn't, but he owned it anyway.

  • @juliegarfield3 Julie, I don't know what to say, except that I'm mighty glad you posted. Let's not let people forget his talent, and the way he could say a line that would make you remember it and quote it forever.

  • John Garfield was my all-time favorite actor. He had the macho charisma and the acting ability that so few of today's younger actors can convey.

  • I'm a big fan of DeNiro,Pacino, and Brando, but they were'nt great in all their movies. Garfield was great in everything.Check out ...Out Of The Fog. I don't think there was a more charismatic actor than him.He was my fathers favorite as well as mine.

  • John has become one of my favourite actors. TCM just showed Humoresque and I was amazed that he played the part of a virtuoso violinist so well. His fingering of the violin strings was almost note perfect , even on very fast runs !!

  • My grandmother died last year at age 91 and she always remembered first seeing John Garfield on the screen in Four Daughters. She and her friends were stunned. They'd never seen anyone like him, a beautiful, troubled, "ethnic looking" rebel crashing into the world of upper middle class WASPs He was before them all - Brando, Dean, DeNiro, Pacino - and he single handedly changed Hollywood forever. Damn "the fates, the destinies, whoever they are that decide what we do or don't get."

  • wish they'd release it on dvd.

  • My all time favorite actor. Sad, that he left us so soon. God only knows the performances we never will see by such a respected and talented man.
