http://fatnews.com/ Hi, this is Larry Hobbs @ FatNews.com.
Here is a list of risk factors for depression as noted in a speech given by Joan Mathews Larson, PhD in September 2007.
This list was taken from the book The list is taken from the book Essential Fatty Acids and Immunity in Mental Health by Charles Bates, PhD (1987, 1990).
Depression among close relatives.
A family history of suicide, schizophrenia, or other mental illness.
Alcoholics or fanatic teetotalers in family tree.
Any religious fanaticism in family.
A personal or family history of Crohns, cirrhosis, cystic fibrosis, Sjogren-Larsen syndrome, eczema, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, PMS, scleroderma, diabetes, or benign breast disease.
Ancestry that is 1/4 or more Irish, Welsh, Scottish, Scandinavian or Native American Indian.
Almost all people with this ancestry benefit tremendously from taking Evening Primrose Oil.
Warning: Do not give Evening Primrose Oil (omega-6 fatty acids) to Schizophrenics. It will make them worse.
Give Schizophrenics omega-3 fatty acids instead.
This was noted by Joan Mathews Larson, PhD in a speech she gave in September 2007.
For 30 years, Joan Mathews Larson, PhD has been treating addiction, anxiety and depression with natural supplements in order to correct the underlying biochemical problems which cause these conditions.
Dr. Larson is the author of 7 Weeks to Sobriety, Depression Free, and 7 Weeks to Emotional Healing.

I find it a bit unnerving that she finds 'religious fanaticism' strange to be on the list. Maybe it's just me, but I got the impression there that perhaps she is very attuned with her faith and considers it more of a healing opinions, as opposed to a problem.
I believe faith can be a useful tool in mental health, but the opposite is also true, and can be damaging in many ways that are clearly too numerous to count.

I would not equate religious fanaticism with faith.
Here is what she said as part of a list of people who are at risk of depression.
She was reading this list from another book by Charles Bates, MD called "Essential Fatty Acids in Immunity and Mental Health".
"... fanatic teetotalers in your family tree...
"or... I love this one... any religious fanaticism in your family... [people in the audience laugh]... I think that's odd."
I don't think she was making a judgement, but just found it odd
