"Cow Camp" Celebrates Successful First Season
Summer Camp for Girls, By Girls Teaches Horse Care, Golf, Money Management and More

Alex and Kate Guernsey (ages 7 and 8) of Northern California became, perhaps, the world's youngest summer camp organizers this July.

They didn't want to attend one of the usual summer camps and so, the two entrepreneurs convinced their mother, Lana Guernsey, to let them host their own camp and invite several of their friends. "I told them if that was what they really wanted to do, they would need a theme and should give me a proposal about what would happen at this camp," Guernsey explains.

Eight-year-old Kate followed up this request with a PowerPoint presentation outline of what five days of horse care camp would look like, complete with a camper and instructor schedule for she and her best friend, who were to teach the units.

The premiere season of Cow Camp was born. "The camp was originally called Camp KAL Rocks, using the first letter of our first names," Guernsey says. "But everyone kept calling it Cow Camp. It's catchy and it fits because of our last name, which is also a type of cow."

Life Lessons from Summer Camp
While Kate knew from day one she'd be offering horse care as one of the activities, little sis Alex wasn't as decisive. After giving it a great deal of thought, she decided to incorporate mini golf lessons along with arts and crafts activities for the campers. "Golf is a fun activity anybody can do," she says.

Alex continues, "Mom gave me a budget of $100. I was going to use that for a woodworking camp, but I bought golf clubs instead, so I changed my camp to golf. I didn't have enough money to change my mind again."

This was just one of the money management lessons the girls learned during the week's activities. Running the summer camp, the Guernsey girls received real life lessons in:

- marketing
- finance
- problem solving
- time management
- how to motivate and manage employees

Cow Camp Activities
The camp incorporated a host of fun activities and culminated in a sleepover under the stars. During the week, campers took part in games like garden hose jump rope (an original game invented during the all-camp water fight), plus:

- Field trips
- Mini-golf
- Swimming
- Horse care

Kate says, "At other camps, you can't even get to touch horses, but at my camp you get to do real horse care and touch real horses. Now that's fun!"

What It Takes to Achieve a Goal

Ken Lauher, a celebrity Feng Shui consultant based in New York City, sponsored the camp in exchange for content for his popular Feng Shui blog, which includes life tips that emphasize using intuition and the power of intention to achieve success.

"The fact that the girls pulled off a successful summer camp, with their mother's help, of course, is evidence of intuition and intention at work. They knew what they wanted, created a plan, recruited the support they needed to make it happen, and achieved their goal. It's truly inspiring."
