NANAIMO - A litter of starving pit-bull puppies on the verge of death has been turned over to the Nanaimo SPCA. Cruelty investigator Julie Hitchcock says a pair of teenager dog owners were trying to make a few bucks for the holidays by selling the dogs on the internet.
The SPCA was tipped off about the litter of puppies after they appeared on the website Craigslist advertised for $600 each. It's the third batch of puppies now recovering at the Nanaimo SPCA from horrifying treatment at the hands of so-called "backyard breeders." Hitchcock says 33 dogs have been taken into custody in the past two weeks. Eighteen puppies are now up for adoption.
The smallest was comatose and near death when the SPCA found it. The SPCA will help nurse it along with the rest of the litter back to health and then look for a loving family for adoption. The SPCA is urging people to help stop backyard breeding by reporting anything suspicious by asking dog breeders lots of questions about how the animals are cared, who their vet is, and why they dogs are being sold in the first place.
