For the last time...I broke my left clavicle on September 24th 2007 in Boulder City, NV. I was attending the Interbike Bicycle Convention for bicycle retailers. On the first day there I flipped forward and landed on the left shoulder inverted, breaking my left collarbone. The first fix on October 1, 2007 was a threaded rod through my clavicle. The seven pieces of bone did not grow back together during the 10 weeks the rod was in me. I started rehab in January of 2008 and it started to hurt ...bad. It hurt so bad i went back to the doctor and a CT scan revealed the non union of the bone, it did not grow back together. On February 21, 2008 i had a 5 inch titanuim plate and six screws installed. The rebreaking of the bone required a bone graft as well...another 20 weeks in an arm sling. I rehabed successfully that summer. Winter 08/09 was cold and I am skinny so the plaate had to be removed. The temperature changes from outside to inside to outside...wow painfull but I could not live with that plate anymore. The plate was removed on February 12th...another six weeks in an arm sling bringing the grand total of 36 weeks in a sling out of 80 weeks...im still rehabing now building that muscle up ...again

  • pain is temporary, eventually it goes away, but occasionally it comes back too. When I had the plate, I was a barometer, I could tell you it was going to rain or not. Now that the all the metal is out, it is 10 times better. PT works, do it tell it hurts then do it again.

  • (sorry for double post). con't....Plate's been in about 10 months - extremely painful, complicated by nerve damage. Plate is coming out in next surgery. Going on 60 weeks so far. In total, how many weeks from the original accident, did you take to heal. What percentage of usage do you have today? My situation seems similar to yours. I have pics on FB of much of it so far.

  • @kevink18 I guess it was 1 yr 7 mo, total from injury to no sling full no Dr limitations. I have 95% use of my shoulder, so not bad, still have some scar tissue, when all the metal came out it felt better too.

  • I just broke mine on monday had surgery the other day... the most painful injury ive ever had.

  • @dance689 Take it easy and let it heal. I have 95% mobility cause I finally got it fixed right and I did my exercises for rehab. Pain is temporary. I wish you well.

  • Thats insane!!! I just broke my left collarbone from a bike accident too! Thats CRAZY!! (nothing to get excited about but... yep!)

  • Wish you well...my break was unique and overall I was in an arm sling for 35 out of 85 weeks total. So I advise you to take it easy and let it heal right the first time.

  • Hey man i broke my left clavicle 2 weeks ago. Mines happened just like yours i flipped forward off a jump and landed of my left shoulder. It broke and then theirs another broken fragment in between. My clavicle does not go back to its place cuz its sitting on a fragment. Its pushing against my skin. Check my video. Should i get surgery or not? Seems like a pain with the plate'n'screw inside your body. I just want it to grow back all nice and strong. What do you recommend? Please reply Thanks bud

  • omg sorry for triple post!! Effffing firefox!!!

  • was browsing for clavicle surgeries, came across this. Working on surgery #6 upcoming June 2011. Original break (4 places, and sternoclavicular dislocation). Had Rockwood pin put in. I too was skinny, and the pin actually eroded through my shoulder. Infections for nearly 5 months, pin was taken out, left to heal. Didn't heal. Had 10 hole plate put in with 9 screws and bone graft from femur. Plate's been in about 10 months -.....
