Jeff and Raleigh Snowshoeing on Mount Laguna - Early Saturday morning, just as the big rain storm came to an end, Jeff and I ventured up to Mount Laguna. This storm dumped around 6 inches of rain around San Diego County, and well over a foot of snow on Mount Laguna. As we drove up Sunrise Highway just around sunrise, it was still snowing. We made it up the mountain without getting stuck, despite having problems with our snow chains. Four wheel drive, good tires, and a locking differential saved the day. We came across several trucks stuck in the snow on the way up. We lended a hand (and our shovel!) trying to help one of them get free. He was in a 2WD pickup, and had no chains, no shovel, and was wearing tennis shoes. Not smart. A ranger showed up and took over for us, so we continued up the mountain. We hiked in the snow for over four hours and at least 4 or 5 miles. Snowshoeing is exhausting! But it was very serene.
.there has to be at least 2 inches of snow down and a winter storm warning before they require 4-wheel drive chains. BTW, the city of san diego gets snow nearly every winter in its extreme northeast corner- an area known as the san pasqual valley. so it's not just on the outskirts....
