I also think she might've already told him the truth but he doesn't like it so she's saying "I was only seventeen, I was young and silly, why can't we stop worrying about the past and just start from where we are?"

I think in the past she was pressured into sex by someone she trusted when she was seventeen (I was only trying to keep the walls from closing in, I was only waiting 'round for something to begin, I was only seventeen) now she's trying to move on with this new guy in a new place. But when they try to get closer she doesn't want to because she's remembering the past/she doesn't want to rush it like she did before. And he wonders what he did/is doing wrong. (continued)

She says, "I am sure there are things you would rather keep inside, I won't ask you about all the things you tried. Don't let yesterday get in the way, why can't we just start from where we are?" This means she does not want to dwell on the past and she knows her new man has things he does not want to reveal. She just wants to be with him and forget about before.

She does not want her new guy pushing for the truth because she does not want to hurt him or hurt herself. The guy was her friend who pushed her for sex and she wanted to be with him. That is the reason it says, "I was only waiting around for something to begin." She does not want to remember what happened because she is trying to move on with her new man. I think we have all had an experience like this at least one time in our lives. Something we do not want to remember. I know I have!

I think the girl regrets what she did at seventeen. She was naive and young, so she had sex with him thinking he loved her. She told her new guy "that it did not mean a thing," because she was so young. Everyone in town knew what happened. She could not see past the moment when they had sex because she thought she was going to be with him for the rest of her life.
