@SkullOfYorick they also air what commercial channels don't. I doubt that you'd find any broadcaster with shows like Gardener's World or The Secret Life of the Nation Grid.
The BBC have to provide programmes that suit *all* tastes, including what you might pass off as commercialised c**p. the BBC have been doing this for years so it's nothing new (Noel's House Party, generation game, record breakers etc)., so I fail to see what you are complaining about. If you want dumbed down, watch ITV!!!
@AidanLunn In fairness, the BBC is as dumbed down as commercial channels these days. The BBC airs what people want to see, just as commercial channels do.
@EmpireLS56KW yeah, it's called public service broadcasting. Look at the uneducational downmarket crap on the commercial channels to see what the BBC would be like without the licence fee.
NICAM Digital Stereo was quite impressive delivering crystal clear digital quality stereo sound on many programmes, pity this system is being replaced by MPEG2 digital stereo on DVB with Sky/Freeview and cable as part of digital switchover.
Anyone hear Art of Noise?

It's interesting to note that the 'STEREO' font under the 1 and the 2 is the same font that was to be used in the 1997 idents 6 years later...
