"The Source of Human Morality" - a debate held at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on November 16, 2010. Hosted by UMBC's Orthodox Christian Fellowship and Secular Student Alliance. With Matt Dillahunty and Father Hans Jacobse.

Matt Dillahunty is the president of the Atheist Community of Austin, and host of the popular public access television and internet show "The Atheist Experience." He was raised as a fundamentalist Baptist, and was on track to become a minister until he started asking questions about the reasons for his belief. He rejected religion, and now serves as a public voice for rationality and secular morality.

Father Hans Jacobse is an Antiochian Orthodox Priest, who administers the website Orthodoxy Today and heads the American Orthodox Institute. Fr. Hans is convinced that Orthodox Christianity has an important part to play in American moral renewal. He views the current world as a battle between competing moral visions of the secular and the sacred, and hopes that Christianity can restore the moral tradition of the gospels.

  • WHAT? Christianity has a sense of self correction? That's total bullshit,

    1. Because the laws are written down as divine law that CANNOT BE CHANGED.

    2. Because god says THOU SHALT NOT FUCKING JUDGE.

If you can't judge because god forbids it, and if the things you COULD judge if god allowed you to were UNCHANGEABLE DIVINE RULES FROM HEAVEN DIRECTLY FROM GOD then you can't "self-correct:" them. This priest doesn't even know WHAT THE FUCK he's talking about.

  • So he thinks the bible is BS. Why the heck is he a preist?

  • Priest rambles. Worst thing you could do in a debate.

  • Very very contradictory viewpoint from Father Hans Jacobse. He states that Christianity is self-correcting in terms of it's moral abominations of the past. The problem is that Christianity depicts God's word as unchanging, infallible and the end-all truth. If Christians have to change the word of God or in essence modernize the word of God, then that right there shows that the original word was INCORRECT. This is in high contrast to the original interpretation of the bible's infallibility.

  • Matt you got to com to the U.K. Would like to have a pint with you and NOT talk about religion!

  • The priest completely fails on the argument of slavery. The bible STILL advocates it, and provides guidelines for it. It is flat-out WRONG, no matter who says it isn't.

  • this guy has a real thing for the pagans

  • matt then the father, then matt then the father

  • Bla bla bla. The priest is beating around the bush. A burning bush .. hehe

  • Blah, blah, fucking, blah.

  • Atheism is not a philosophy. It is merely a lack of a belief in god. Damn Christians are hard to teach.

  • Matt, I love your work man, but you let this douche steal a free 5 minutes by not asking him, "DUDE, do you have a question or WHAT?!?" Don't let a d-bag hog the mic like that in the future, por favor.
