Hello on this Tuesday, the 4 day of September 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update.

President Busy is in Sydney, Australia today after making a surprise visit to Iraq yesterday. The President touched down for six hours in Anbar Province to offer his personal thanks to the troops. The White House is hoping his visit would be a potent symbol to Congress and the world that the surge is working, at least in the area he visited. Bush is now in Australia for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is dismissing suggestions that a pullout of UK troops from their base in the southern Iraqi city of Basra was a defeat. Instead, he insists that it was pre-planned. The move consolidates most of Britain's 5,500 force at Basra airport, which has been hit daily by mortar attacks. British forces will remain in that city to train and supervise Iraqi forces.

Two unions are giving the nod to Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards. The United Steelworkers and the United Mine Workers of America are endorsing the former senator. Edwards accepted the endorsements yesterday in Pittsburgh, home of the Steelworkers' international headquarters. This move puts Edwards ahead of all other Democratic hopefuls in labor endorsements. The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America are also backing him.

Idaho Senator Larry Craig will step down from the U.S. Senate at the end of the month. Craig announced his resignation over the weekend, surrounded by his family and the state's governor. This comes after the senator pleaded guilty last month to a disorderly conduct charge relating to allegations that he solicited sex in a Minneapolis airport bathroom. He has called his guilty plea a mistake and denies engaging in such conduct. During his resignation speech, Craig thanked his family for their support as well as Idahoans for the opportunity to serve as a senator.

That's all for now. For more on these stories and all of the day's news, go to upi.com. Have a great day.
