The Monarch Butterfly is one of the most amazing animals in the world. Their bright colored bodies attract humans and fend off predators. Monarch butterflies are the only butterflies that migrate south for the winter. What is truly amazing is that no one butterfly makes the entire trip. It is the great grandchildren that return.

The slow rhythm migration of Monarch butterflies occurs to me as a natural form of minimalism. In creating the music for this piece I decided that I would tell a story not only aurally, but visually using a stop-animation video. This piece uses two marimbas in which the players perform musical patterns including a canonic idea at the sixteenth.

Enjoy!
