  • @tiecuando Almost everyone that sticks with it will have a black belt in that amount of time. Only a small percentage stick it out to blue belt level, and that is only the first promotion. Only a small percentage of those make it to purple, and a small percentage of those to brown, etc. Because of the "live" training method used in bjj, it really is just a matter of sticking with it. You can't help but get better if you simply keep showing up.

  • @Jonobos I didn't say ten years, I'd hope one could be a black belt by then.

  • @tiecuando The belts are just a symbol of your progress. 1 year white belts will almost always thoroughly dismantle people with no grappling experience. Competition is just a way to test yourself against trained opponents. I agree that competition will speed the process. But it doesn't take 10 years to achieve a purple belt. Anyone who sold you that load is the one running the scam.

  • So, if one must practice for ten years to handle a single encounter(seems ridiculous to me), then I think the belt system should go.

  • @Jonobos This just sounds like a big pyramid scheme to me. I like the idea of aliveness, it's something I don't see in most (exceptions apply) traditional martial arts, and freedom is a good thing. Still, if you wanted to cut down on time taken for a purple belt, then you should compete. I don't want to take away from the accomplishments of athletes, but I also don't want to be programmed for a certain environment either which doesn't resemble SHTF. (continued)

  • @tiecuando What about it? It takes too long? What should they do, start giving out belts to people that don't deserve them? They have standards. This is widely considered to be a good thing.

  • @Jonobos purple belt. Duh!

  • @tiecuando I don't understand this statement?

  • Good stuff

  • Too bad purple belt takes too long to get.
