My point is that the X type never had potential, A, because it was too costly to build and B, because there already existed an entry level Jaguar namely the S class.

Ford tried to be clever and of course It didn't work because they didn't understand the brand.

I too understand that the car had its merits. But it didn't make any money for the company and it cost sales of the big Jags which is where the real profits lay.

  • @acorntechnique sales did dilute but t\an xtype really was an option. most of the road test said the xtype was very good.

the xtype had potential if jaguar wasnt the last word for luxury car

  • @acorntechnique well we can get some good points

the x type was a cheap jag. ill admit that. but an x type really was an option,

for te germans, you had to go one trim up for 4wd, this one is 4wd. it was a ford as well so servecing should be cheap

ok fine the styling was xj

but the last time in that era jaguar made a car that didnt look like an xj was

xj6, xj220, mk2, s-type and others. the last one i mention, they we're goin desperate making a grill from the mk2.

To make matters worse, the car was almost a dead ringer for the big Cat. It looked like an XJ which had shrunk in the wash.

But it was just a Ford wrapped up in a jaguar look-a-like body with a cheap leather interior and everyone knew it.

It was of course a popular car but didn't make any money for Ford AND sales of the big cats dropped off as the brand diluted.

Jaguar execs warned Ford this would happen.

Ford ignored Jaguar's warning and forged ahead with their plans.

You may ask though Im not sure that I can be bothered to write why all over again as Ive covered this theme many times before in other posts but in brief:

The whole notion of a 'cheap' Jag for the everyman goes against the grain of what Jaguar was all about. Ford diluted the brand by introducing a cheap Jag which as everyone knows was based on a Ford Mondeo complete with Ford engine and gearbox and even came off of a Ford production line.

  • @acorntechnique may i ask y the xtype was a mistake?

  • I'd rather have the Super V8, but hey I'll take this one too!

  • @talonsbrutus

and the reality of course is that the Jaguar and the Lexus cant be compared.

The lexus is just a luxury Toyota.

The Jaguar is a 'prestige' car.

(apart from the x type which was a demand of Ford, and which proved to be a huge mistake.)

  • i saw a lexus gs and a xj in minneapolis race at a stop light it was awesome i didnt see the winner. I loved to drive this car...it looks like a mans car.

  • and its rock solid lol
