Northstar commuter departing Target Field at dusk

It's Sunday, November 22, 2009, just after sunset. I am on Washington Ave. N. looking west along the BNSF main line as the 4:45 pm* Northstar to Big Lake, Minnesota pulls out of Target Field station. It's on one of the two platform tracks; after passing through this switch it follows a single track to another switch, where it joins the mainline just before crossing the Mississippi River to Nicollet Island. The freight train is stopped on that mainline, waiting for the Northstar to clear. The train is full of purple people who had attended the Vikings game that afternoon. Although I could clearly recognize this, my camera did not show it so well, but I'm impressed that the vid turned out so well for such a dim evening.

The body style of the locomotive is reminiscent of the old Skytop Lounge observation cars which were used on the Milwaukee Road's Twin Cities ~ Chicago Hiawatha trains before April 1971.

* Unlike the timetables of many other rail commuter lines around the country, the Northstar schedule does not show individual train run numbers. It follows Metro Transit's local schedule format of showing only the route numbers - in this case, #888.
