Vasily with the last lift breaks Redding's record of 228kg. Notice the knee bend right before the press, looks to me a no-lift. Nonetheless, a new world record for Alexeev.

    Re: "Truly a Powerlifting ICON."

Wrong. Truly an Olympic Weightlifting Icon.

Even truer - Truly a Sport Icon.

To add, Vasiley was not naturally so heavy. He intentionally gained mass. That usually involves eating a lot. Plus, who knows what else may have contributed in the Soviet sports program. But, as it stands, Vasiley is probably more of a model of an exceptional athlete prospering in a very difficult time and place.

Vasiley was exceptional. He made his world records in small increments so he could get rewarded each time. Many Soviet athletes were probably not able to benefit as he did there.

Thank you. I get my fair share of abusive, trolling comments. I just ignore them. I am happy to see real people responding, not some idiot with a keyboard.

I looked up the numbers, and it is interesting. Vasily lived to be 69, and died of a heart attack. The current life expectancy of a Russian male is 64.3 years. But I agree that state run programs as seen in many communist countries such as the USSR, East Germany, North Korea, etc are inhuman and harmful to the athletes.

    Good Comment-

Thanks-Usually people here whom don't agree or have something to say, are rough, vulgar and crude. You are a normal gentleman. Thanks--This type of interchange, I believe all civilized people yearn for

How many die young from heart attacks without ever making any efforts?

I doubt lifting would be a direct contributor to his death. Sig Klein had an impressive military press and many other feats of strength, yet, he lived to 85 I think. Sig was also a lightweight/middleweight his entire lifting life, so maybe there is a body type correlation, but not a lifting one.

Alexeyev was never in great condition from a cardio standpoint, but he had a lot of muscle. Seems guys like this don't tend to live long lives. Partly genetics, partly the abuse on their bodies, partly diet and how they treat themselves in the long run.

"..The Soviet System of Athletic Training is tantamount to how one trains Circus Animals.." - It's not just the Soviet system, that's what athletic training is all about. I call Olympic gymnastics the festival of trained monkeys.

Did it ever occur to you that Alexeyev loved to lift. That he started serious training in his twenties and trained pretty much without paying any attention to coaches. Not like the 11 year old kids selected from their schools. He did it his way, broke 80 World records in seven years. A life well lived, that blazed a trail into uncharted territories of strength, was a life worth living. It was not a wasted life at all.
