This is an episode of the BBC science documentary series 'Horizon', called 'The Mondragon Experiment'. It was first broadcast in November 1980. It's a really fascinating documentary, and still relevant when you think about what's happening with the world economy today.
There's an amazing scene of unemployed men being retrained - as well as social security to maintain a decent living standard, the unemployed are offered free training and then the prospect of a job with another co-operative.
This is NOT distributism. Mondragon embrace globalism, mass-industrialism and ownership by syndicates, whilst distributism is localist in vision, favours cottage industry and has ownership is in families rather than syndicates.
This, for those who've been bored by any discussions about economics with me, is Distributism in practice! As far as I can see, Capitalism is eating itself alive and Leo XIII's model is the only way forward!
If a business could keep all of its workers' massive initial capital investment and wages to paper over losses and get subsidized by the coercive State it would always be profitable as well. This is proof of why co-operatives will never work.
