There are some excellent bands in Portland. Metal, Rock, Alt., Jazz, Outlaw Country... you name it, there are some great musicians here, but we have a huge amount of really bad noise makers here too.

I don't know about the music scene, but it's nice for the local business to have a steady flow of cheap labor... like that crushed glass factory, they make crushed glass mmmmm, breathe in deeply. I think that factory that just makes sparks is also in Portland, the one you see in movies.... just sparks, nothing else.
