X-FLARE: Departing sunspot 1402 unleashed an X1.7-class solar flare today, Jan. 27th, at 18:36 UT. The explosion also produced a spectacular coronal mass ejection (CME): SOHO movie. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab say the cloud raced away from the sun at 2500 km/s or 5.6 million mph. The CME is not heading toward Earth, although it is too soon to rule out some kind of glancing blow on Jan. 28-29. Stay tuned for updates. http://spaceweather.com

  • Freaking insane angle on that shot. I can't believe how active that sun spot was.... Thanks so much!

  • @quantumtheo They are less geoeffective, but yet, more picture perfect, when these regions are on the far E/W limbs...Hate to see this one turn-over the W-limb...Peace!

  • pretty big indeed we should stand at the look out, now what if a similar flare of this size were to hit earth directly? what would the consequences be?

  • @XFallingDeeper4U To speculate...It could cause geomagnetic storming on or about the Kp=7 or Kp=8 index, proton event could cause a S4-radiation storm. But each flare, eruption and CMEs are different, speed, density, magnitude, direction, and duration, none the same...it would be hard to tell...But this was a good one!

  • Brutal.

  • @roargathor Indeed!

  • Things are getting hot! thanks for the beautiful video.

  • what was the strongest flare ever recorded that actually hit the earth? plus do we know the strength of that big one that hit in 1859 (or whenever that was) and caused electricity lines to catch on fire?

  • I just LOVE when I hear this song at the start of one of your videos!! Always means something spectacular!...gives me little goose bumpies hehe...thank you!!!

  • WOW! What power!! Im glad it didn't shoot this way! It's exciting to watch the awesome power of the sun!!
