what was the strongest flare ever recorded that actually hit the earth? plus do we know the strength of that big one that hit in 1859 (or whenever that was) and caused electricity lines to catch on fire?

@quantumtheo They are less geoeffective, but yet, more picture perfect, when these regions are on the far E/W limbs...Hate to see this one turn-over the W-limb...Peace!

pretty big indeed we should stand at the look out, now what if a similar flare of this size were to hit earth directly? what would the consequences be?

@XFallingDeeper4U To speculate...It could cause geomagnetic storming on or about the Kp=7 or Kp=8 index, proton event could cause a S4-radiation storm. But each flare, eruption and CMEs are different, speed, density, magnitude, direction, and duration, none the same...it would be hard to tell...But this was a good one!
