Extaction was released in 2003, I first heard Holdsworth playing proto cosmos ten years earlier than that..........

This is nothing to do with discipline. Allan's style is jazz/fusion. The whole point is that it is improvisational music. A jazz fusion tune /is/ just a head (main melody) and a set of chord changes. The particular solo played is just one nights interpretation of the piece. If you remove the aleatoric/improvisational component - you have changed the form/nature of the music.

this song it's proto cosmos and i think the main riff was originaly made by allan pascua during the tony williams lifetime period,,, anyway brilliant!!

saw him at Rutgers Univ. in some small lecture hall back in 1986 for $5 bucks... best finski i ever spent.
was still in high school and ditched out early to make it on time for the show's start.
