Evolution of a phaser test:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ufclp5CBxHI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICagFj0yDoQ

In this phaser barrage test, I re-edited the soundtrack again and changed all of the effects shots to depict a greatly-extended Decker attack on the planet killer. Although I was pleased with the end result and took this sequence almost all the way to completion (all that's missing is rendering the next-to-last sequence and adding background asteroids to all of the shots), when I showed this clip to a few people back in April I got a LOT of negative feedback that mostly went like this:

"You're kidding, right?"

"Too repetitive!"

"Too long!"

So, back to the drawing board...

PLEASE NOTE: This presentation is not endorsed by CBS Studios Inc. or Paramount Pictures Corporation and should not be confused with the official Star Trek: Remastered episodes syndicated by CBS Television Distribution and available on Blu-Ray and DVD from CBS Studios Inc. (Be sure to buy the Blu-Ray season box sets. They are totally awesome!)

  • WOW! Love the scene where the enterprise is swooping in to the attack; beautiful! You also effectively demonstrate the rather impressive firepower of the Constitution Class... and the hopelessness of attacking that THING.

Did you loop the music for the extended barrage scene, or is that the original score unmodified?

    Very good work

  • @Leopardmadcat Thanks! And yes, the soundtrack was heavily modified/looped.

  • AWESOME!! Definitely better than the CBS version. Ugh...

My only comment is that maybe it goes on too long...and I'd have the Enterprise "zooming" just a little bit faster. ;)

I love the opening shot for when it bears down on the DM!!

  • @PromusKaa Thanks, it's my favorite bit, too. :) I was going for the feel of an attacking hawk.

Then you see what the Enterprise is attacking, and it's more like a sparrow attacking a fire-breathing dragon.

  • How do you do your phasers?

  • @CJCA915 The phasers are my own secret brew of LightWave particle effects and some lens flare added in post-production. I tried phasers that were completely post-production but they just looked drawn-on. These phasers look like bolts of plasma are actually being emitted from the Enterprise's phaser banks... because they are.

  • @SpadXIIIFlyer Actually, in TOS the phasers were Blue, Red, Orange, Green, and Purple, depending on the episode. MOST were Blue or Orange.

  • My only problem, is that the TOS Enterprises had BLUE phasers, not the orange/red one. But amazing work never the less.

  • I have just one quick question. Why did you go for the original view screen shot of the Enterprise and the planet killer just before you switched to your spec. eff. battle scene? (Which I thought was killer, by the way) Why not FX that scene as well. Kind of inconsistant.

  • I love how the "skin" of the Planet-Killer ripples and boils in an alien way :D

  • My only recommendation is to make the phaser bursts a bit more random, like perhaps have one phaser bank fire one shot, then have another phaser bank fire another shot. Otherwise it looks excellent! And I definitely love the re-envisioned planet killer!

  • Love the size differential... Has that David vs Goliath feel... EXCELLENT thought process went into the scene... The extended battle is perfect showing the futility of the enterprise attack as oppose to a brief battle... Confirms the earlier scene when Scotty tells Capt Kirk the Constellation's phasers banks were exhausted, and how they didn't give up without a fight... We can see how THAT battle could have happen... GREAT JOB!!!

  • The visuals are very good. Like someone else said better than the original version. However, I suggest that keep the phaser bursts longer, about two to three seconds. This will give less repeating feeling and stronger sense of attempt trying to destroy the doomsday machine.

  • How did you do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!
