Turkish Foreign Minister ahmet Davutoglu was in Washington, D.C. this week to meet with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to discuss the ongoing conflict between its ally, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, with whom Turkiye, with the help of allies including the US and Russia, is attempting a rapprochement after decades of strained relations.
"I certainly appreciate the very strong position that the Turkish Government has taken," Hillary Clinton told reporters at a joint press conference following the meeting with Davutoglu .
Davutoglu thanked Clinton for the U.S.'s support, adding that Turkiye is optimistic about achieving a prosperous and peaceful Caucasia region.
"And in that sense, we are fully committed to our normalization process with Armenia," said Davutoglu, "we are fully committed and we are ready to work together with United States and other co-chairs of Minsk Group for the resolution of Armenian-Azeri issues."
The Minsk Group was set up in 1992 and is co-chaired by Russia, the United States and France, to resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
In late April, Turkiye and Armenia announced an agreement for a road map to normalization to be mediated by a Switzerland.
Turkiye is being very careful to balance its interest in resolving the conflict with its interests as Azerbaijan's close ally.
