After a two-year wait, the MTH R142A subway cars have been delivered, and I got mine on the test track just as soon as I got them home. Unlike many of my videos, this train is a brand-spanking new product that is just hitting stores as of a week prior to this video being uploaded. Thus, you can find it at your MTH dealer (assuming they carry subway trains--you might have to look around a bit if you don't live in the Northeast), or Ebay.

Although Protosound2 doesn't yet have a program for direct-drive electrics (like older subway sets, it uses a diesel program (albeit with more memory for the station stops), which explains why traction motor sounds often rev up and down independent of the train's actual speed), the MTH sound engineer did a fine job working around the limitations, so as long as you accelerate at a prototypical rate, the AC propulsion sounds will play just like the real thing. I'd advise turning off the speed control (one long horn, two short bells) if you run these with anything less than a *big* transformer (I'm using a 100-watt Z-1000).

Details MTH included include:
--Accurate A and B cars
--Underbody detail unique to both A and B cars
--Separate air spring/shock absorber details on the trucks
--Trip cock details on the proper location on the trucks
--Separately applied grab irons and storm-door chains.
--Car numbers printed on their roofs
--Short-shank couplers installed

In the second part of this video, I attempt to demonstrate a station stop sequence, but ended up piecing together footage of various attempts to get both trains to perform the routine in sync, as I allowed them to get *out* of sync, and since each stations' routine is a different length, the trains would not only announce two different stops at the same time, but one would try to start up several seconds ahead of the other. I elected to re-create it in post-production because the daylight was fading fast.

  • on the tracks, does it have a real 3rd rail to power the toy train?

  • @bluer68

Most O-Gauge trains in the US have been of the 3-rail variety. It goes back to the early 1900's as a means of avoiding the complications of conflicting polarity on reverse loops. (Short answer: yes)

Outside third rail has also been done, but not as a manufactured product. It's seen mostly on O scale club layouts built up to the 1940s or so (assuming they haven't been subsequently modified to 2-rail). The Bay Ridge club in Brooklyn is one example..

  • Hello question do you have DCS and if so can you pls help me out with creating a lash pls step by step or e-mail me at TuffFootDriver@aol.com thanks Greg

  • @tufffoot

I did not have DCS at the time I shot this train. Creating a lash-up is a matter of selecting the "create lash-up" option, picking the engines you want in it, and designating one as the leader and the others as following in either forward or reverse. I just followed the menus on the remote. Only problem is you lose control of the volume on the trailing units--they go to full volume and stay there till you separate them. I've yet to break apart this first consist though.

  • nice post more please!

  • @RailRide meh have you seen the old lot and lots of trainz they have the best layouts even the coal car ar operated

  • @gtasandman

Well, the M7 is several hundred dollars cheaper, so no motorized doors there :D

You just have a lever on each side of the car to open/close the doors on that particular side of that particular car, same as the MTH R32.

  • @RailRide i know but on the m7 bombardier only the lead car doors work

  • @gtasandman

Searching "Lionel subway" took less than 10 seconds to find a video showing all the cars with operating doors: ...watch?v=b1PDq3__XKs

Only the lead car has motors, but that refers to the ones that drive the wheels, not the doors.
