  • what would be the best type of stock saddle to fit my Thoroughbred he has a large wither and i have tryed 5 diffrent saddles and all of them have ether not fitted him or me i have only ever ridden in stock saddles and if i don't find one i will have to go western or english

  • Hi makala291 - horses with tall, narrow withers do best with a serge panel type of stock saddle. This panel is similar to an English saddle, but is covered with wool serge rather than leather. It will mold to the shape of your horse's back over time, and do a better job of grabbing the withers. Your best bet for fitment is to buy from a supplier that has experience fitting Thoroughbreds and can adjust a saddle to fit your horse's specific wither tracing, such as Down Under Saddle Supply.

  • Hello i was woundering what version of australian saddle you would reccomend for a horse trainer. I train many differnt kinds of horses (mainly quarter horses) and dont want to buy a different saddle for each horse. I have my own horse, and want the saddle to fit that horse better than any other horse but also want the saddle to be comfertable for any horse i ride

    Thank you

  • Typically quarter horses do better with a wide, fleece panel Australian saddle. The fleece panels work better on multiple horses. You will probably also want a correction pad that you can use to "pad up" if you use the saddle on a narrower horse than your own.

  • Using a saddle on different horses is a bit like using a pair of shoes on different people. If the shoes are too big, it is possible to wear them by wearing thicker socks or a liner. If the shoes are too small, you are out of luck. If you train mostly quarter horses, I would go with a fleece panel saddle that is wide enough to fit your horse well, and then "pad up" for a narrower horse. Use a correction type pad or just fold a blanket double at the withers under your regular pad.

  • would the aussie saddle fit a high withered arab well?

  • Absolutely! Look for an Australian saddle with serge (as opposed to fleece) panels on the underside. These work very well with high withered horses.

  • I own a vintage stock saddle that I was given when I was 13 (2nd hand) &can truthfully say is the ONLY type I,m ever really comfotable in.

  • We've got Three of them, and would NEVER go back to Western Style saddles... two Serge types, and one fleece lined, fitted for different backs... have had Horses stumble to their knees, and NEVER came out of the seat!! these are almost like having your seat "velcro'd" in place! LOL!!

Also, I had TERRIBLE issues with my knees, and knee pain when riding western... switching to the Aussie saddles CURED THIS! That alone, was worth the switch!

  • @DownUnderSaddles ok cool thank you so much i will get on the phone and start looking :)

  • @DownUnderSaddles Wonderful!! I have had no luck with finding any western saddle to fit her (I have tried 4), and I hear such great things about Aussie saddles.
