This is a fuller (three times the length), higher-quality, version of a film put up two years ago.

The film was made in April 1999 in Kyoto by Windfall Films. Please see www.alanmacfarlane.com under 'Global History' for details and other films. The camera man was Robin Probyn

The book JAPAN THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS by Alan Macfarlane explores the mysterious context to this film. It can be found at http://tinyurl.com/5ocjfp

  • What I want to know is: why has part three of four [eye make up] been made private when it wasn't three weeks ago? This puzzles and annoys me because it was the most interesting part.

  • Because a number of comments were made about the comments on the film - which some found offensive. So I took them off... Alan

  • I'm assuming you mean comments on the film? Why can't that part be edited out if that's the case? Can I assume that these comments are also on the shorter version of this film, which itself still remains on youtube. It's a real shame that some people have taken it upon themselves to be offensive: I was using these videos as part of my personal study and as a result feel I have lost some valuable footage.

  • Thanks for your concern. No, they were comments made by someone involved in the film-making. I do not speak Japanese, so I don't know what they said - but it offended some viewers. I don't think they can have been on the shorter version, as no-one complained when I put that up. Alan

  • I HATE the close tight shots.... It ruins the whole thing. Having to hear the director talk, and ask her to stop made me want to rip my hair out. Should have just stepped back, shut up and filmed it.

  • This process must be terribly frustrating for the maiko having to stop again and again at the director's whim @__@

  • I know she puts wax on, but is it a particular wax?

  • Whoever the director is, is really starting to tick me off.

Every time he talks, he makes me want to strangle him.

There's a certain way that these women do their thing. Theirs a certain way for a reason.

  • Perhaps you should disable comments? I would love to watch that film.

  • We want part 4 as well! :P
